Operation Dreamspace: Getting on the Same Page with My Partner

After an open conversation with my partner, Operation Dreamspace has been amended, and I can’t believe I didn’t go with this version in the first place! It’s funny how trying to see things from the point of view of another can open up a whole new world!

In a nutshell, he told me he wants to travel more and see the world, but also loved it here in New Zealand, and close to family and friends… so that got me thinking… what if…

What if instead of setting up a large yoga/music/design studio which accommodated many people… I set up a home small yoga/music/design studio for myself at home, rented a dance/yoga studio by the hour to teach from, spending the rest of my day creating wearable art and music at my home studio as originally planned… BUT I would only do this over the gorgeous New Zealand summer?

The remainder of the year could be spent somewhere else warmer in the world…

…learning from more experienced yoga teachers…

Tiffany-Cruikshank-Yoga

…immersing myself in different cultures…

Parramasala-580x379

…and taking home A LOT of new inspiration to feed from, and new yoga tips to teach over the next New Zealand summer?!

I mean is that an artists’ dream or WHAT?!

If you’re going to bother dreaming at all…. why wouldn’t you want to dream BIG?

What are you dreaming about?

Operation Dreamspace: Update #2

Music

No clear wins on the music front, have decided to get back to some songwriting also in the next week, and even start (very crudely) recording some of these, in order to play them back, listen objectively, and generally flex these muscles!

Design

I found myself with some free scribble time this weekend, and was inspired to try a bit of a mash up with some ideas people had given me to throw in my ‘ideas jar’ (will write about this at some stage!). Anyway I ended up scribbling some crude ideas for Bioshock: The Ballet, LOL! I didn’t even have a rubber on me, so any mistakes I just had to roll with… with mixed results, but it was a fun wee exercise!

I actually don’t know much about the Bioshock videogame series, so I spent a fair bit of this time trying to research the storyline and characters to get a feel for the concepts that should be considered and included. It didn’t leave me too much time to actually draw but feel free to laugh along with me with a couple of my concepts below!:

If you aren’t a gamer, and would like some background on what Bioshock is all about, I’ll try and break it down in a way that (might) not offend the dedicated Bioshock fans… A plane crashes in the ocean, and a passenger by the name of Jack manages survive, finding himself in the underwater city of Rapture. The discovery that a substance called ADAM can modify DNA and help people gain superhuman abilities had led to all sorts of mischief (as you can expect), and Jack ends up taking on all sorts of evil, with many little story lines and twists weaving in between. If you’re interested in the game, you can check it out here!

For my digital design time, I didn’t end up creating much that was new, but instead spent a bit of time tweaking current designs after a new round of samples appeared at my door and I decided I liked the style better, and had to change all my designs to adapt! I’m soo happy with my leggings, my GOD they’re so soft and comfortable! I can hardly believe this brand is all mine! All new versions are going to be released by the end of the night, with a bit of a celebratory sale! so feel free to take full advantage 😉 Check them out at www.grimponie.com

Yoga

This week’s pose to work on (read: move towards achieving) was my middle split.

My flexibility has frankly been atrocious my entire life, and the flexibility I have gained so far may seem like what any normal person should have but trust me… I had to work for it…

FANTASTICALLY, noticed some change in my flexibility! It seems like some weeks .there’s a whole lot of streching, but no acknowledgable progress, and then one day, BAM, progress! I never used to be able to straighten my legs while in “happy baby”, or touch the ground when stretching one leg at a time out sideways, but both were achieved this week!

Although I feel like the time of day also helped, because it was a Sunday and I had been running around doing life admin beforehand, warming my muscles up more than what they would usually get before a practice session, but hey, I’ll take it.

Is there anything more better than feeling a muscle you’ve been working on stretching out for WEEKS, finally give up and allow you to find surrender in a yoga pose? It’s just soo delicious!

Anyway, I digress (as usual). No middle split yet achieved, but it is still a work on progress. This next week, my pose to focus on will be Pigeon Pose! Let’d do it 🙂

I hope you’ve made some progress towards your dream this week!? I’d love to hear about it! What do you dream about? How are you going to get it?

Operation Dreamspace: Windowshopping for the Perfect Space

So let’s say I could drop everything right now and go live the dream in my dream studio, and in the dream location (unlikely), but if I could, where would that be? What EXACTLY would it look like?

I have been windowshopping…

Potential Option #1

It does look like a wide open space, and love the fact that there is a photography area all set up! Pity about the dead animals everywhere… ALSO, I’m not crazy about it being right in the central city, how can I romanticize about having the warm, fresh by peaceful air flowing in through the french doors, if it’s right on K’ Road?? Although there is the sweet little benefit of being able to hit Revell cafe for vegan pancakes whenever I want…

c138b142bacccd72273fcab05724f875 aa1277bffcffe8d3f4a83d39f77263c5

Honestly this was the only studio that peaked my interest was available to rent fulltime, not by the hour, IN THE WORLD. So that’s it… the list ends at 1.

So hey, what’s not available?! There was a real theme going with the studios that I did like the look of… notice a theme? 😉 fresh air and sunlight ahhhhhh. Just add on some extra space for a workroom and a recording studio and we’re in business!

Funnily enough my favourite of these is the last one, next door to what looks like a house, and overlooking greenery for miles. OH YES. Looks like that answers a few of my questions around where I should look, and whether I should rent… this is a custom dream which requires a custom solution.

I love little exercises like this! What would your dreamspace look like?

Operation Dreamspace: Update #1

sport-treadmill-tor-route-163444.jpeg

This is probably going to be a very long operation… better get cracking then!

Honestly most of the work is going to be in getting somewhat good at the things I want to actually DO in my Dreamspace studio for yoga, design and music! And of course consistency is key when it comes to getting better at something, so I have committed to at LEAST the following daily (as a minimum!)

Music

  1. 15 minutes guitar practice,
  2. 15 minutes bass practice,
  3. 30 minutes vocals or show rehearsal while I’m getting ready for this

Design

  1. Sketch out at least one concept wearable art design,
  2. Create one new digital design for Grim Ponie (even if I end up hating it), or learn one new digital design trick

Yoga

  1. Practice daily to increase flexibility
  2. Each week will pick a new pose to tackle ,or circle back to a pose I’ve struggled with, and will spend a good chunk of each daily practice to focus on alignment of, or preparation for this pose

Honestly I find I manage to squeeze in more than the minimum most days, but achieving the minimum is great for confidence, especially when it’s been a busy day at the day job to pay the bills in the meantime!

I’d love to hear of any ideas that helped you master your own craft quickly?!

Share the knowledge!

Honing in on the Dream

What does your ideal day look like?

Most motivational books I’ve read and people I’ve listened to, ask this question. For the longest time I thought I had a rough idea of what I would like to do for the next 30 years at least, before retiring and doing what I ACTUALLY wanted to do. So I guess, it wasn’t really the correct answer to the question in the first place.

What I should have been doing is thinking about what I would like to be doing with my time if I could retire NOW. That’s where the sugar is. Except for just as long, I didn’t really know what that was either, not the nuts and bolts of every day anyway, up until recently.

Picture this…

Waking up to a large, warm and sunny yoga studio, flooded with light. I would spend my morning practising and teaching yoga, and meditating in the morning light.

The remainder of the day would be spent researching design inspiration, and creating amazing pieces in the sunny workroom attached to the yoga studio.

The night would be spent making music, eating good food with my favourite people, and perhaps a good glass of the red stuff.

All very romantic I know… I know in practice it wouldn’t be all as easy and breezy as it sounds! but I’ll be damned if I’m just going to wait until I’m in my 60’s to have it!

Now that I know what I want, and can just about feel that warm morning sun on my face I don’t want to wait! Operation “Dreamspace” is now underway! 🙂

I am of course still very amateur in all 3 of the areas which I plan to take up my time with, which is an obstacle in itself because I don’t know enough about either of them to jump into a career in a particular area so it will take time to gain the skills (and the funds) I need around my day-job, but hey, this is progress!

Time to re-focus and hone-in on those dreams!

I’d love to hear what your answer would be? ♥

WIP Wednesday

Woo holidays! Not that I’m slacking off…! Man oh man I wish I could afford to learn and create all day every day, but I’m just not at that level (yet)… motivation…

Music

I haven’t really been focusing on learning new songs, but rather on just gaining speed and confidence, so I’ve largely been focusing on various scales and trying to play the current songs I know at the speed they’re meant to be played, and I am gaining confidence every day so that’s a good sign!

I’ve gone back to basics with singing as well, focusing on breathing, etc. and really trying to make it all second nature so that I have a solid foundation to build on. As well as trying to memorize lyrics for new songs I didn’t quite know off by heart. It’s much easier to focus on your technique if you don’t have to think about the words too!

Sewing

I haven’t been sewing as such… more like destroying! In other words, I’ve been experimenting with shredding and weaving some old shirts of mine that I never wear anymore. The holidays has of course been an ideal time to clear out my drawers of anything I don’t wear, and try out some upcycling ideas, so that will probably keep me busy for a wee while.

I quite like the results for this one, and I think it will probably become a yoga top, which is a bit funkier than a crop top and tights! I’ve left the front plain (bar the studs that were already around the armholes), and created a bit of fun in the back.

Yoga & Meditation

It has been bliss being able to practice while it is light. It makes such a difference to the feel of the practice! And having as much time as I want afterward to meditate? Luxury! Now this is why I have worked hard all year… If working even harder next year will get me closer to a place where I can do this every day? Then that is definitely some incentive to dig deep and grind…

French

I’ve only just started trying to teach myself French (via an app as per yesterday’s post!). It is such a beautiful language though, so I’m looking forward to being able to crack out some lines, or even (and a more likely scenario), wander around the house creating and talking myself through my process in french as I start to get a little frustrated with what I’m doing and start to lose the plot as it gets later…).

Have a fantastic, productive, crazy day!

WIP Wednesday

Tomorrow will be my first day off in 3.5 weeks, and I’m looking forward to spending much more time on these wee gems! Here’s where I’m at, at the moment:

Music

Still working on Lamb of God’s “Pathetic”. Still playing it at half the regular speed, and probably will be for some time, but I’m pretty happy with it.

Sewing

I’ve started sketching out my ideas, although I’ve never done this before, and I think it will take a bit of practice to get them looking on paper as they do in my head!

I did however manage to whip together this wee gem. It was for a 70’s themed party, although I love it so much that it might become a regular wear!

Yoga & Meditation

No major milestones achieved with my yoga lately, probably owing to the fact that I’ve been working quite late at night which impacts on the next morning. With the holidays starting tomorrow I’m looking forward to being able to practice every day in the sun! Luxury.

Reading

I’m still workin on “The Clan of the Cave Bear” by Jean M. Auel, but I’m just about done, and have been lent the rest of the series now, so I’ll keep you posted.

The story is based on the days of the caveman, and has undertones of struggles that many of us can relate to in modern times (loneliness, struggles with communication, expectations of society, feeling different, etc.). It also throws a lot of the modern assumptions about what life would have been like for these people, how they would have felt about their social structures, and how they came to do things in certain ways. So if you’re interested in these kinds of things it might be right up your alley!

DSCN1022.JPG

I’m currently re-listening to “Be Obssessed or Be Average” by Grant Cardone. I don’t even know how many times I’ve listened to this now! But I find it helps centre my focus and keep on my track if I re-listen to it every now and then. It was after all, the book that helped to re-ignite my fire…

I’m curious to know what everyone else is working on? Any books I should be adding to my reading list?

Have a fantastic, productive, crazy day!
